National show for Gypsies and Travellers comes to Camberley Theatre
The Western Gazette reported yesturday (9th April 2016) that Polly Worner, a traveller from South Petherton has organised ‘The Traveller Factor’ which is a national talent show for Gypsies and Travellers. It will be held at the Camberley Theatre on Saturday 9th July 2016.
My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding star Paddy Docherty is set to make an appearance as a judge.
In the Western Gazette report Mrs Worner, said she came up with the idea for the show “to give her community a chance to show their musical talents on stage”.
“We had so many entrants and people sending us videos and we have now got the backing of Paddy, who will be our guest judge”.
Several production companies have shown interest in the the show and there is an enormous amount of interest from the Gypsy and Traveller community. A facebook group for the show has over 4000 followers (as of 10th April 2016) and growing by the day.

Michelle, the Travellers that are currently occupying the Windlesham Field of Remembrance car park is very small scale. I visited yesturday and from what I have seen they are not making a mess and there is no more than 5 caravans.

Not all travellers behave like this and while I agree there is no smoke without fire, I think we don’t have anything to worry about here, especially as Paddy Docherty is involved.

When I drive around council Estate and see the state of some of the houses and the rubbish in the gardens and the way some of the people live who are not gypsies I think you should put your hands over your mouths cause some of you live like pigs and I wouldn’t let my dog live in the house with you wouldn’t no what being clean is

You cannot generalise but there are a substantial proportion of travellers that do behave very differently from non travellers. I have had a stressful experience with them and have known of others who have too. They have a habit of creating much misery to many including the animals they have. The horses..the dogs…Most rescue dogs from Ireland. .of which there are thousands..are from gypsie sites. Why are policy e too scared to interfer with the chaos they can create? Many of their cultural behaviours do not fit in with society’s ethics and moral outlooks of this country. Those that are law abiding and honest citizens are there but are over shadowed by the many that are not.

Wow ! I am shocked by the majority of you. I`m neither Gypsy nor Traveller but I respect their way of life just the same as anyone else indiscriminate of race, colour or creed. It`s not just Gypsys that create mess, we all do !
It`s going to bring revenue to your town, the same as any other big event. I doubt you`d all be carrying on like this if it was a non traveller / gypsy event.
I`m shocked and disgusted that in this day where we fight racism etc, there is still prejudice and generalisation aimed at the travelling community.
Perhaps if you removed yourselves from behind your keyboard and visited a traveller / gypsy site, you`d be pleasantly surprised.

The discrimination and racism from people here is disgusting! Not everybody is the same and in this country it is drummed into us that we should celebrate diversity yet it seems that the only minority we are all so quick to insult is gypsies, why?
We encourage integration of every society and yet gypsy families and worse their children are judged unfairly and made to feel like they don’t deserve the respect of people like you that are criticising!!!
What is it that you don’t like? The way the love their children? The way they put family first? The fact they are always cleanly dressed and their homes are spotless?
I would guess the things you actually don’t like is the fact that many have more money than you and a nicer car than you and couldn’t give care what you think of them, that’s would really bugs you!
Gypsies pay tax like the rest of the self employed world or guess what……..they are employed and pay tax like the rest of you!!!
So what we’ve actually got is a culture of people that are clean, respect their families, look after their elderly relatives, work hard, pay tax, earn good money and try if you bigots let them to have a peaceful life with their kids in education!!!

There are good and bad people in all communities, however l can only go on my experiences of areas where travellers have stopped for a few days before being evicted. All of the areas were left in a disgusting state and the work to clean up the mess cost a lot of money.
As for the person ranting on about filthy houses, gardens and children perhaps they should take a walk around Heatherside. As for residents separating knickers from tea towels……..l can’t say!!

Can I ask how you know that these people are Romany gypsies? I am assuming when you say travellers you are referring to a group of people of the same race as opposed to just people that travel? You realise not just gypsies have caravans right? What you’ve said is the same as saying because some people let their dogs mess on the path and not clear it up I will assume all dog owners let this happen only you are talking about a race of people but as most of you think dogs are higher up the socially acceptable chain than gypsies I thought it would assist in your understanding!

This is what I have to say. There are good gypsys about just as there’s bad ones too. I have met messy and lazy groups that make a bad impression on the whole community but I’ve also met groups that are more polite and well mannered than the so called upper class snobs in our country. I prefer to keep it simple and speak my mind. If anyone makes a mess then they’ll get found out and delt with properly. Also (and this is to you Robert!!!) There’s no excuse for being racist, sexist or discriminating towards someone just for their choice of lifestyle. You seriously need to grow up, get over yourself and move into the 21st century. If your that worried then you should pay to get extra staff in to make sure the laws and local rules are followed. Polly Worner, you have been a good friend to me for many years now and I’ll say this to you and your contestants, they have fabulous voices and no matter who wins I wish them all the very best! I’ve been a publican in the area with two pubs for 20 years so I write this with plenty of experience. Whilst not ALL travellers are badly behaved unfortunately I have to admit most of the ones I have come across have been very difficult to deal with. I’m no racist in the slightest but they bring it upon themselves and are a publicans worst nightmare. Sorry, but that’s from 29 years of experience and the truth. All of us publicans are absolutely dreading this event.

Laughable to see the first comment saying that if Travellers were in power there would be no discrimination . Travellers are and have proved here with their other comments that they are one of the most discriminating group of people in England. Good or Bad, tidy or untidy, No one of colour or other country or LGBT is accepted by Travellers, and they believe themselves above ALL “house dwellers”. They have cassette toilets in their lovely caravans which could be emptied in public toilets, no need to defecate on our village greens and parks as well as the dirty nappies tossed into the bushes. Health hazard to everyone . This is not discrimition its fact.
Fly tipping warrants huge fines and as the authorities have the registration numbers of the vehicles for eviction orders why don’t they prosecute them like we would be prosecuted for fly tipping and use the funds for the clean ups.

Unfortunately the Travellers do have a bad reputation,some of it caused by wedding shows on tv about Travellers.I would imagine that most of the pubs will close on the evening of the talent show as it would be a risk to stay open with Travellers and the public causing trouble between themselves after a few beers.But don’t let’s prejudge the situation,let’s see if there is any mess left behind,any thieving&most of all,any trouble!

Travellers have pitched up in Cantley Park in Wokingham. In the following week there was a robbery of a pub, a break-in at the station and then a Land Rover driven through the station building itself and the ATM robbed. Unrelated though I’m sure.
