Surrey Police is appealing for witnesses following an attempted ram raid at a supermarket in Chobham.

The incident took place at the Tesco Express store in Station Road around 4.15am yesterday (Tuesday, 21 June), when a black 4×4 approached the store and two men got out and smashed a store window.

The men then entered the store and unsuccessfully attempted to remove a cashpoint from the store before driving away from the scene at high speed.

At this early stage it does not appear that any items were stolen during the incident.

Following the attack Surrey Police officers are in the process of carrying out a thorough and extensive investigation – including reviewing local CCTV footage and carrying out house to house enquiries.

Detective Inspector Pete Howgate said: “This was a clearly pre-planned burglary where a group of men have caused considerable damage to the supermarket.

“Fortunately the burglars left empty-handed but serious offences of this nature cannot and will not be tolerated in Surrey and I would appeal for anyone with any information about those responsible to contact us as a matter of urgency.

“The breaking of the glass window would have caused a lot of noise so I feel certain that people would have seen or heard this incident and may also have seen where the vehicle used by the burglars went following the incident.

“We are working closely with our Safer Neighbourhood Team colleagues to find the offenders but I would like to assure Chobham residents that this was an unusual and isolated incident.”

Anyone who witnessed the burglary or with any information should call Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference 45160052559, or call independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
