Could you be a councillor?
23 May 2017
With local elections held in some areas of the Borough each year, local people who are keen to support their community and help shape Woking’s future, are invited to attend an informal presentation to find out more about becoming a local councillor.
On Saturday 10 June 2017, Woking Borough Council will host the presentation at ChristChurch so that local people, who have a qualifying nationality, are over the age of 18 and lived, worked or owned a property in the Borough for at least a year, can find out more about the roles and responsibilities of becoming a councillor.
The presentation, which starts at 11.30am, aims to give an overview of how the Council operates and what skills and time commitments are required, along with details about payment and expenses. Current councillors will be on hand to answer questions people may have about the important role.
Here is what two current councillors said of the role, Cllr Ian Johnson: “Working as a councillor is a different world with new challenges and opportunities. It’s well worth doing.” Cllr Mark Pengelly said: “One of the most important things I do is to make myself available to listen to residents about their everyday concerns.”
Ray Morgan, Woking Borough Council’s Chief Executive, said: “I would encourage all local people who want to make a real difference and help shape the future of Woking or have a keen interest in their community, to go along and find out more about the role they can play as a local councillor.”
The event will be held at the The Skylight at ChristChurch, Jubilee Square from 11.30am on Saturday 10 June 2017.
