Cllr David Bittleston has been confirmed as the new Leader of Woking Borough Council, following the decision by Cllr John Kingsbury to stand down, at last night’s meeting of Full Council (Monday 22 May 2017).

During the meeting, Cllr Bittleston also announced his Executive and their portfolios.

Cllr David Bittleston, Leader of Woking Borough Council, said: “I am honoured to accept this role of Leader of the Council and confirm the new Executive and their portfolios for the coming term. I am confident that the new Executive delivers the right blend of experience and fresh thinking that will help us meet the challenges ahead, whilst delivering our exciting plans.

“In particular I look forward to progressing the regeneration of Sheerwater and the Victoria Square development. Both of which will, once complete, deliver significant benefits for our residents and our Borough.

“Upon accepting this role, I must also extend my gratitude to Cllr Kingsbury for the great contribution he has made to this Borough as Leader. His dedication is an example to us all, whatever your political allegiance. On behalf of the Council, both elected members and officers, I would like to wish John every success for the future.”

During his nine years as Leader of the Council, Cllr Kingsbury has overseen key decision relating to the regeneration of Woking Town Centre and the adoption of Woking’s Core Strategy. He will remain as Ward Councillor for Heathlands until his retirement in 2018.

The new Executive members are:

  • Cllr Colin Kemp - Deputy Leader; Portfolio Holder for Housing; Portfolio Holder for Independent Living
  • Cllr Ayesha Azad - Portfolio Holder for Finance
  • Cllr Beryl Hunwicks - Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services; Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing
  • Cllr Mark Pengelly - Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Cultural Services
  • Cllr Ashley Bowes - Portfolio Holder for Planning
  • Cllr Saj Hussain - Portfolio Holder for Economic Development
