Service personnel, veterans and dignitaries joined the Mayor of Surrey Heath, Councillor Valerie White, as Surrey Heath Borough Council raised a flag for the UK Armed Forces (Monday 19 June) . 

The Armed Forces Day flag was raised outside Surrey Heath House ahead of the national day of commemoration, which this year takes place on Saturday 24 June. 

The flag was simultaneously raised by local authorities across the country for the week leading up to Armed Forces Day.

Cllr White said at the ceremony: “Surrey Heath is extremely proud of our connections and continued relationships with the military in the borough.

“Each year this Flag is raised to show the support of our Armed Forces, both serving and those who have served, and to offer our thanks for all the vital work you carry out in protecting our citizens and the country.”

Also in attendance at the ceremony were SHBC Chief Executive Karen Whelan, Deputy Leader of the Council Cllr Richard Brooks, Lt Col Tim Cave-Gibbs of The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, WO1 David Lightfoot of the Cadet Training Centre Frimley Park, and Lt Col Jonathan Scott MBE RE and WO1 Mark Eastley, both of the Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment, Gibraltar Barracks at Blackwater.

The Mayor’s Chaplain, Reverend Andreas Sistig of St Anne’s Church, Bagshot, officiated at the ceremony.
