Major scheme to cut congestion at Runnymede roundabout set to start
A major scheme will get under way this week to cut congestion at one Surrey’s worst traffic blackspots – Runnymede roundabout.
Nearly 2.9 million vehicles use the roundabout annually between 8am and 9am and 5pm-6pm on weekdays. That rush-hour figure is expected to rise by around 390,000 by 2031.
The roundabout will be widened, resurfaced and a new loop added making it easier to get into Staines. More details can be found on the map above.
Around two-thirds of the funding for the work came from the Enterprise M3 local enterprise partnership with the county council providing most of the rest. The main work on the roundabout will start on Monday 10 July and there will be overnight closures that night and this Sunday.
News about the improvements comes just days after it was revealed that the county council was part of a new body called Transport for the South East that aims to improve travel in the region and boost the economy.
Colin Kemp, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “Good roads help businesses grow and residents go about daily life. This roundabout plays a key role in journeys on the M25 and to Heathrow, Staines and beyond, although the work wouldn’t have been possible for us to do on our own as money is so tight due to the rising need for services like adult social care.
“With millions of vehicles a year already using it in the morning or evening rush hours alone and hundreds of thousands more expected to in the coming years, these improvements are vital for the continued success of Surrey and the South East’s powerhouse economies. We’ll make every effort to keep disruption to a minimum during the work, but we’d also urge motorists to plan ahead.”
Lane restrictions and temporary traffic lights will be in place throughout the project, which is due to last around eight months. Information will be published on Surrey County Council’s website. Email updates are available by signing up on the site.

Replace the trees on the roundabout on completion please the Egham people want this
July 5, 2017
For 32 years I have driven in to work along the A308 Runnymede road and turned right on the Runnymede roundabout onto the B388 to Egham. It looks as though this will no longer be possible which is a huge frustration so I am not a fan of the changes.
I cannot see any real advantage to the changes other than for those who come off the slip road from the M25 and now have a little loop round onto the A308 to Staines. All other changes aren’t really changes at all. Not impressed with who ever came up with this plan. Surely it would make more sense for the A30 bypass to go straight through to the M25 slip. Make the loop from the A308 Staines to the M25 also and traffic light the rest of the junctions

There is no showing of the loop on here ,,why,,,,I hope you know what the loop is ???
July 5, 2017
Hi, How does traffic voming from windsor on the A308 get into Egham using this scheme please?
July 5, 2017
Why did you have to kill the trees on the roundabout?
July 6, 2017
I think it will make traffic from Egham town even worse if that’s possible. Have 2/3 lanes coming into roundabout at present. Cutting it to 1 will cause chaos. I live in Old Windsor and I do hope it will improve our daily struggle to get out onto the A308. Don’t see the point in reducing the lanes coming out of Egham
July 6, 2017
how do you get from windsor/runneymede/a308 , round to egham , or the a30 south!?
July 6, 2017
so why did you need to cut down all the trees.. its a disgrace,,!
and how do you get round to egham , or a30 south from windsor/a308 !?
July 6, 2017
This is crazy. What about drivers that come from Runnymede and want to go to Egham. This means you have to drive towards Staines to mini roundabout and back up again then left to Egham. Surely this would cause more congestion.

The roundabout scheme looks lovely…but doesn’t explain the plan for safely merging the slip road off the M25 and A308 out of Staines. These 2 lanes of traffic will now want to rearrange themselves into 4 lanes to enter the roundabout!
There are already daily accidents at this point as a result of them merging to rearrange into 3 lanes!
I am delighted by the decision to introduce lights onto this roundabout, to improve flow onto the roundabout. Also that these lights will keep traffic at a more sensible speed around the roundabout. Will there be lane markings around the roundabout as it is becoming so much wider? The danger of bad or inexperienced drivers veering out of lane is higher on a wide roundabout. This is another common form of accident on this roundabout.
Concern has also been raised about the lack of exit for Egham residents heading from Windsor, as they appear to have to exit towards Staines and then go round the Glanty roundabout in order to re-enter the roundabout to exit at Egham. Surely this increases the volume of traffic at the vital crunch point I first mentioned: the M25 sliproad entry and A308 entry from Staines!

How can you turn down B388 if you are coming from Egham bypass a30. Do you have to o up the a308 to the roundabout and back again??
July 6, 2017
How do you now get from Windsor to Egham without having to make a detour?
July 7, 2017
I am sure that I will not be the first to raise this question, and I was not the first to spot the deliberate mistake it appears to have. That is “How does anyone coming from Old Windsor get round the roundabout to go to Egham, or Egham-By-Pass”. It looks as though you have to go down The Causeway and round the Sainsbury Roundabout to get to the lane to go to either place.
I apologise if I am being daft, but perhaps you would make it clear to everyone. This article has been posted on facebook and is receiving a lot of similar comments. A response would be appreciated.

Super idea. If it goes ahead I will say WELL DONE
July 7, 2017
Is anything being done about traffic traveling from staines along causeway aiming for egham, it means a fight to cross traffic coming off glanty loop to get into egham. Also coming out of egham it is murder especially if there is problem on motorways and all traffic pouring off. The traffic lights should be turned on, also Ascot week. Egham becomes grid locked
July 8, 2017
I’d love to know who’s idea this was and why the loop was in someway better than another lane on the outside and so this leaves us with just one lane from egham and a 30 and Windsor into staines and all the trees destroyed for nothing hurrah for town planners
July 9, 2017
This isn’t the only roundabout with a problem this then overflows to Staines bridge and the roundabout before it
July 10, 2017
Does this get read by anyone at the council? As this madness still seems to be happening
July 9, 2017
Approaching the roundabout from Windsor on A308, how do you get into Egham Town on B388?
July 9, 2017
And how pray would one get from old Windsor into egham has this been thought through at all?
July 9, 2017
If you are coming from Windsor and want to go to Egham there is a smaller roundabout the other side of the motorway, you would have to loop around that then turn left.
Agreed the roundabout needed work. It this seems an odd solution.
July 18, 2017
Can’t call it a roundabout anymore because, well, you can’t go around it right? Assuming you need to go around the next real roundabout heading towards Staines.
Also by 2031 there will be a big shift away from owning cars to sharing cars via autonomous vehicles. Ok, I know that’s a bit ‘pie in the sky’, but it will happen. Perhaps then less lanes and more trees.
July 26, 2017
does the people who decided this drive? it is a total waste of time and money and is going to make things worse
