Two men have been arrested on suspicion of breaking into two shops in the early hours of this morning (18 July) in Laleham and Lightwater.

At 00:40am a break-in was reported at Best One, Shepperton Road, Laleham. The shop window had been smashed and two men were seen leaving with a large bag as well as carrying a large knife.

A similar incident was reported at Co-op, Guildford Road, Lightwater shortly before 2am. Suspects were seen exiting the shop through a hole smashed in the window, dragging a large bag and dropping cigarette packets as they made their way to a parked BMW.

Armed response officers on routine patrol sighted the vehicle on Egham Hill and pursued it along the Egham bypass, the causeway, across the Staines Bridge and into Two Rivers Trading Estate where it drove into a dead end. The BMW was then put into reverse but the police vehicle used stopping tactics to stop it being rammed.

The car was found to be full of cigarettes and both the driver and passenger of the vehicle were arrested. Suspects remain in custody as enquiries continue.
