Statement by Cllr David Bittleston following incident at Brookwood Cemetery
20 July 2017
Cllr David Bittleston, Leader of Woking Borough Council, said: “I regret to confirm that a serious incident took place at Brookwood Cemetery late yesterday [Wednesday 19 July 2017] afternoon in which two members of staff were attacked and suffered stab wounds.
“One was stabbed in the chest and taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting by air ambulance, and remains in a serious yet not life threatening condition. Whilst the other was taken to the Royal Surrey with stab wounds to the arms and was thankfully released yesterday evening.
“This was a frightening attack on two members of staff who were simply carrying out their jobs. We are all deeply saddened by this unprovoked and vicious attack.
“At this time our thoughts are with those affected, their families and colleagues who were present at the time.
“We will do whatever we can to support Surrey Police with its ongoing investigations.”
Brookwood Cemetery will remain closed until Monday 24 July 2017.
